Exercise and Elderly

The Exercise and Elderly course develops specialist knowledge for students designing and supervising exercise programmes for older adults. As people age, physiological changes can affect strength, balance, mobility, and recovery, which increases the need for safe exercise prescription, appropriate progression, and careful risk management. Regular physical activity can support functional independence and reduce certain health risks, but programmes must be adapted to individual needs and medical considerations.

Exercise and the Elderly for Safe Fitness Programming in Ageing Populations

Older adults can benefit significantly from structured physical activity that supports strength, mobility, balance, and confidence in daily movement. Ageing can also bring changes in physiology, joint health, coordination, and recovery, which means exercise programmes must be designed with appropriate intensity, safe technique, and careful progression. Effective older adult programming focuses on functional outcomes that support independence and reduce risk.

This course integrates ageing physiology with practical exercise prescription, helping students understand how to programme safely for older adults across different health conditions and fitness levels. Students learn age-related physiological changes and how these influence training choices, alongside risk awareness, supervision techniques, and safe coaching practice. The programme also covers adapting exercises and progressions according to individual health status and movement capacity, supported by foundational exercise science in anatomy, biomechanics, nutrition, and physiology as they relate to older adult fitness programming.

This course is delivered by Trifocus Fitness Academy. On successful completion, the certificate is issued by the delivering partner college.
